It seems that the Intel Core Duo processors that are all the rage these days may be a little more powerful than Intel would have you know. Thanks to a little detective work, it’s been discovered that the processors, deep down inside, are actually 64-bit compatible. Yes, that Core Duo you have right now is a 64-bit chip. Intel openly admits that its Sossaman chips are 64-bit, but does not mention this fact about its consumer-targetted Yonah chips, despite the fact that the two are one in the same. What consumer (or geek) would not want to play around with a 64-bit Linux distribution, or Windows 64-bit for that matter? Intel may just have some explaining to do.

With articles, like the recent one from Information Week, fueling the Upper management with outdated information and half truths, how does an IT professional defend his position and educate upper managers to take those articles with a tiny grain of salt and trust their experts? HLBR is a fork of the Hogwash project. It is an
IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) that can filter
packets directly in layer 2 of the OSI model (so
the machine doesn't need an IP address). Detection
of malicious/anomalous traffic is done by rules
based in signatures, and the user can add more
rules. It is an efficient and versatile IPS, and
can be used as a bridge to honeypots and
honeynets. Since it doesn't make use of the
operating system's TCP/IP stack, it can be
"invisible" to network access and attackers. The HLBR is a firewall element.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
HLBR didn't start correctly out of the directory
of configurations and rules, so this has been
corrected. A bug in which .dump files were getting
corrupted was corrected. An on-line manual was
created. New rules were created. A new log
rotating system was added. The installation system
was altered.

Ruby/Google offers a higher-level abstraction of Google's SOAP-driven Web API. It allows the user to programatically query the Google search engine from Ruby. The aim of the library is to shield the programmer from the details of the raw data structures returned by the Web API, and in the process make the API more accessible for everyday use.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
A new method, Search#utf8, allows the user to request conversion of query strings from a given source encoding to UTF-8 prior to sending them to Google. Previous versions of the library had started to fail. It's not clear if changes made to the Google Web API caused this issue. The code has been slightly modified to fix the problem.

Tablix is a powerful free software kernel for solving general timetabling problems. It uses a coarse-grained parallel genetic algorithm in combination with other techniques to construct sensible timetables from XML formatted problem descriptions. Tablix can run on a single host as well as on a heterogeneous parallel virtual machine using PVM3. The default installation will export finished timetables into XHTML 1.1 format ready for publishing on the Internet, or into a "comma separated values" format (CSV) that is suitable for import into a spreadsheet application and further processing. The kernel supports a very wide range of timetabling problems, from high school timetabling to barge scheduling. Several timetable constraints are already implemented in the default installation. Because of the kernel's modular design, it is easy to add custom timetable constraints and/or modify existing ones.
